Wellness is kind of a buzzword in healthcare today. It means “being in a state of good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.” I have attended a couple different wellness courses, and it has definitely made an impact on my, well… wellness! I have had a CIMT, which is a carotid intima media thickness test. It uses sonography to look at the vessel walls in your neck and checks for plaques in these arteries. Luckily, I did not have any plaque, but my artery’s “age” was 13 years older than my chronological age….. that was an eye opener for me! I have also had extensive blood testing for biomarkers indicating inflammation and the size, type, and quantity of fat particles in my blood. I have undergone limited genetic testing to see if I am at risk for heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and indicators for my tolerance to certain cholesterol and glucose levels.
Why am I telling you all this? Cedar Lodge Dental Group is taking a more assertive approach to wellness, and we are new members to the Wellness Dentistry Network. The Wellness Dentistry Network is a nationwide group of dentists that is incorporating oral health into your overall wellness. We can offer blood and genetic testing in addition to a medical doctor referral network that will give you a very personalized view of how the health of your mouth may be affecting your systemic health.
At your next visit, you may be hearing our providers talking about different aspects of your overall health than you’ve heard previously. We may be asking you how you are sleeping if you snore and if you feel rested. We may have a conversation about your risk for periodontal disease (gum disease) and how that disease has scientific links to 57 other inflammatory diseases. You will also see us using glucometers to check your sugar levels and offering blood pressure checks towards the end of your hygiene appointment.
We feel like we can screen and provide some initial testing in many of these areas and can facilitate a referral to your primary care physician, a telemedicine doctor, functional medicine doctor or even a specialist such as an ENT or pulmonologist if you have a specific concern. Be on the lookout for more information on our website and social media as we continue to dig deeper into this concept of wellness!
